Defining the Iyengar® method

Iyengar® Yoga is a complete approach to physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual transformation, bringing physical health and vitality, mental clarity, wisdom, and emotional serenity.

Iyengar® Yoga uses the physical reality of the body to know our minds and the deepest parts of ourselves as human beings.  The infinite perfectibility of the postures or asanas provides a pathway into the development of our intelligence and our ability to concentrate and sustain focus.  This intelligent practice develops our ability to grow and to separate what is worthwhile and productive from what to leave behind.

The method offers:  

  • A safe and systematic progression of yoga postures to develop each student’s ability and skill, both within each class and from class to class
  • Sequencing that develops strength, flexibility, stamina, concentration, and body alignment
  • Highly developed teaching methodology
    • Precise use of language
    • Demonstration and teaching of specific points to develop understanding and intelligent action
    • Individual correction and adjustment of students, when necessary
  • Integration of the yoga philosophy with the practice of asana
  • Relevance of practice and incorporation into daily life
  • Ways to deal with various ailments and stress through Yoga
  • Use of props, such as blankets, blocks, and straps, to facilitate learning and adjust yoga postures to individual needs

The method is named after B.K.S. Iyengar (1918-2014) from Pune, India, who reigns as one of the most influential yogis of this time. In his 90's, he was still teaching thousands of students from all over the world, encouraging them to penetrate deeper into the experience of each pose. This is the trademark of Iyengar® Yoga - an intense focus on the subtleties of each posture.

Iyengar® Yoga, a form of Hatha Yoga, focuses initially on the structural alignment of the physical body through the development of asanas. Through the practice of a system of asanas, it aims to unite the body, mind and spirit for health and well being. Iyengar® Yoga is considered a powerful tool to relieve the stresses of modern-day life which in turn can help promote total physical and spiritual well being. It is firmly based on the traditional eight limbs of yoga as expounded by Patanjali in his Yoga Sutras, emphasizing the development of strength, stamina, flexibility and balance, as well as concentration and meditation .

Iyengar pioneered the use of "props" such as cushions, benches, blocks, straps etc. which function as aids allowing beginners to experience asanas more easily and fully than might otherwise be possible without several years of practice. Props also allow tired or ill students to enjoy the benefits of many asanas via fully "supported" methods requiring less muscular effort.

Standing poses are emphasized in Iyengar® Yoga. They build strong legs, increase general vitality, and improve circulation, coordination and balance, ensuring a strong foundation for study of more advanced poses. Unlike more experiential approaches where students are encouraged to independently "find their way" to the asanas by imitating the teacher, an Iyengar® Yoga class is highly verbal and precise, with misalignments and errors actively corrected. Iyengar® has trained thousands of teachers, who complete 2-5 years of rigorous training for the introductory level of certification (higher-level certification may take a decade or more).

Mr. Iyengar has also developed extensively ways of applying his practice to various ailments, diseases, and disorders.

In general it’s assumed that the participants can practice at least 1 hour per day and attend a class at least once a week.

MICHAEL FORBES
Senior Int. II, (Munich) has been practicing Yoga since 1972. He did his teacher training in Iyengar® Yoga in San Francisco and has been to Pune to practice with the Iyengars there almost yearly since 1986. He’s been training teachers since 1988 and has his own studio in Munich since 1991 which he now runs with his wife Margareta Eckl. He is a founding member of the Iyengar® Yoga Association in Germany (1994) and is presently on its Certification Committee. His early training was in music, choreography and natural foods.

KEVIN GARDINER
Senior Int. I, (New York City, Budapest) has been practicing yoga for 40 years and teaching Iyengar yoga since 1982. He has co-founded Iyengar-Yoga-Institute of Manhattan and has worked and practiced together with the most experienced Iyengar yoga teachers of USA, like Mary Dunn. He also has a deep knowledge of kung fu and other martial arts. Kevin strives to guide, support, encourage, and challenge students toward an intelligent, rich, and authentic yoga experience—in all its vastness. His teaching is highly detailed and textured, seamlessly incorporating many components of yoga philosophy while continuously challenging students to gain greater sensitivity and awareness in each asana. Kevin describes his teaching as energetic, inspiring, and dynamic. He advises new students: “The subject is vast, so don't go too fast. Slow and steady lasts. “Iyengar Yoga is practical, intelligent and progressive,” he says. “This practice always leaves me wanting to go deeper, to return to the perspective of looking inside.”He lives and works now in his yoga center in Budapest.

MARGARETE ECKL
Senior Int. I, (Munich) has been practicing Yoga since 1972. She’s been teaching yoga since 1995 and since 1997 she’s been co-running the Munich Iyengar® yoga studio together with Michael Forbes. She was certified through BKS Iyengar.

Laurie Blakeney is one of the most engaging and knowledgeable teachers of Iyengar Yoga in the USA. She holds an Advanced Level certification granted to her directly from BKS Iyengar. She also has a degree in comparative religion and brings an appreciation of the spiritual to her classes.  Laurie’s teaching is exacting as well as subtle. She strives to find the grace and artistry in the method and how our yoga can positively enhance all we do in life.  Laurie began her Iyengar yoga studies in 1971 and has studied at RIMYI Pune India annually since 1983 and shares her extensive training enthusiastically.

Laurie has served USA national Iyengar Yoga community by being on the IYNAUS Board, chair of the Certification Committee, Curriculum co-chair of 4 national conventions among other committee service.  She currently is the Board President of the Iyengar yoga association of MidWest.
